HHS Careers Update

On September 11, 2006 HHS Careers, the online job application system for the Department of Health and Human Services, was integrated with the Office of Personnel Management's USAJOBS website. This integration will make it easier and more efficient for you to apply for Federal positions and manage your online applications.

This process will allow you, as an applicant, to:

  • Create and store up to five résumés online
  • Create up to 10 search agents, so that you receive email notifications of job postings throughout the government that meet your search criteria
  • Use one login to apply for jobs throughout the Department of Health and Human Services and other Federal organizations
  • Track the status of jobs you have applied for through USAJOBS in one central location

To prepare for this change and familiarize yourself with the new process, you are encouraged to create an account on USAJOBS. If you have not applied for a job using USAJOBS, then you will need to create a new account. Your USAJOBS user account will consist of personal information, your user ID and password, and at least one résumé. If you have already created your account on USAJOBS, then you do not need to re-register.

Other Changes

  • Email notification of job postings will no longer be sent from the five HHS Careers systems. Instead, savvy seekers can sign up for USAJOBS Search Agents with the same search criteria.
  • Job seekers no longer need to visit any of the five HHS Careers home pages, but should bookmark the HHS USAJOBS Search page instead.

Quick Tips on the USAJOBS Registration Process:

1. Access USAJOBS
Visit USAJOBS at http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/. Select the MY USAJOBS option and click the Create Your Account Now! link, assuming you’re new to USAJOBS and do not have an existing USAJOBS user account. If you’ve already created your USAJOBS user account, then log-in and verify your information is current.

2.  Establish Account Information
You will first be prompted to provide contact information, establish user access information and provide citizenship and Veterans' Preference information.

IMPORTANT: You must use the same social security number, first name and last name you entered when registering with HHS Careers. For example, if your first name is "Michael," but you entered "Mike" as your first name when registering with HHS Careers, then you must enter "Mike" as your first name when creating your account on USAJOBS.

After providing basic information, you will be taken to your new personal page on USAJOBS where you can choose to create a new résumé and/or set up email notification agents to alert you of new jobs posted to USAJOBS.

3. Create and Store a Résumé
Follow the instructions to create your new résumé on USAJOBS using its Résumé Builder. The résumé builder consists of four steps:

  • Getting Started
  • Experience
  • Related Information
  • Finishing Up

Résumés created on USAJOBS can be used when applying for other jobs within the Federal government. As an added benefit, you can store up to five résumés on USAJOBS, thus providing you the ability to customize your résumé to the job you are applying for.

Note: you can use your résumé stored in HHS Careers to create your USAJOBS résumé. If you do not have a copy of your résumé stored in HHS Careers, then you have until 5pm Eastern Time, September 8, 2006 to access HHS Careers in order to retrieve and copy your résumé. After 5pm Eastern Time, September 8, 2006, access to your résumé in all of the HHS Careers systems will no longer be available.

4. Create a Job Search Agent (Email notification)
USAJOBS allows the creation of up to 10 different search agents for you to receive email notification of new job postings. Email notification can be established to alert you all job postings that meet your notification criteria throughout the entire Federal government or within specific Federal agencies.

Any email notification preferences you may have set up in HHS Careers will be discontinued after 5pm Eastern Time, September 8, 2006.

5. Apply for jobs
After creating your USAJOBS account and at least one résumé, you are ready to begin applying for jobs through USAJOBS. When you find a job of interest, login to USAJOBS and follow the instructions provided in the vacancy announcement to complete the application process.

Please visit http://www.usajobs.opm.gov/firsttimers.asp for more information on creating your user account on USAJOBS and applying for Federal employment.

6. Assistance with USAJOBS
Should you need assistance with the USAJOBS website, you can contact them directly.

7. HHS Careers Help and Information
More information on the new job application process is available. Should you require further assistance or have questions, please contact the appropriate help desk.

We appreciate your interest in employment with the Department of Health and Human Services.
