RICE: WORLD MARKETS AND TRADE

PRICES:

International: Thai quotes reached a 25-year record high, up $102 from last month to $474 per ton, FOB, on tight supplies, an appreciating Baht, and price speculation. Vietnam is not quoting prices despite ending the export ban.

Domestic: U.S. #2/4 long grain milled rice quotes are up from last month to $539 per ton, FOB. The spread between comparable qualities of Thai and U.S. rice is only $65 per ton (the smallest spread since July 2006) compared to $113 per ton this time last year. California medium grain #1/4 prices are up $25 per ton from last month to $625 per ton, FOB.

TRADE CHANGES FOR 2008

Selected Exporters

  • Burma and India are both boosted 100,000 tons (to 200,000 and 3.5 million tons, respectively) because of strong demand from Bangladesh.

  • Egypt is lowered 150,000 tons to 950,000 due to the export ban.

TRADE CHANGES FOR 2007

Selected Exporter

  • Egypt is increased 150,000 to 1.15 million based on the strong pace of shipments.

Selected Importers

  • Brazil is cut 100,000 tons to 700,000 due to a slow import pace.

 

  • China is down 100,000 tons to 500,000 based on final Thailand data showing smaller than expected shipments.


  • EU-27 is boosted 150,000 tons to 1.15 million due to a strong import pace.
