The NOAA Weather Radio All Hazarrds (NWR) network is the lone government-operated radio system that provides direct warnings to the public for severe weather and natural and technological hazards, from floods to forest fires, to oil spills. Known as the "Voice of the National Weather Service," NWR is provided as a public service by NOAA, an agency within the Department of Commerce. The NWR network broadcasts forecasts, watches, warnings, and other hazard information over more than 560 stations covering the 50 states, adjacent coastal waters, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the U.S. Pacific Territories.
If you want to be alerted when a watch or warning is issued for your area, you need an NWR. NWR is the best way to receive weather information, watches and warnings directly from your local National Weather Service Office. NOAA Weather Radios can be purchased at many retail stores, electronic outlets, web sites, and even some truck stops.
Every National Weather Service office in the United States has at least one radio station that broadcasts weather information 24 hours a day and watches and warnings when necessary. In North Dakota, there are 9 radio stations with broadcasts originating from the NWS offices at Bismarck, Grand Forks and Williston.
What makes NWR such an important addition to your home is that it can turn itself on and alert you when a warning has been issued, no matter what time of day or night. Some radios alarm for all watches and warnings issued within the range of the radio tower, while newer models can be programmed so that you can pick the county or counties and the type of watch or warning you want to be alerted for. NWR operates on an FM band and your reception will be influenced by terrain and distance from the transmitter.
