Partnerships Key to Better Health Care in Azerbaijan
USAID’s Health Partnerships Program convened a Partnership Program Dissemination Conference in Baku at the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Azerbaijan on May 7 to share ideas and successes. The USAID-supported Health Partnerships Program, implemented by AIHA has been operating in the Caucasus Region since 1992. In Azerbaijan, four partnerships—three in Baku and one in Ganja—have linked local healthcare institutions and providers with counterparts in the United States in a collaborative effort to improve the quality and scope of healthcare services available to the Azerbaijani people.
This conference was the culmination of eight years of program operations in Azerbaijan and brought together current and former partners, government officials, and representatives of USAID and other donor organizations. USAID Country Coordinator for Azerbaijan Scott Taylor, Deputy Minister of Health Senan Kerimov, and American International Health Alliance (AIHA) staff Jeyhun Mamedov and Kate Schecter each delivered opening remarks at the beginning of the event. Representatives of Primary Healthcare and Family Medicine, US partners from Livermore, California, and local AIHA partners shared their insight on the status of healthcare service delivery in Azerbaijan and many best practices and model programs implemented through AIHA’s partnerships and other associated programs in the country.
The Health Partnerships Program in Azerbaijan has led to marked improvements in the areas of practitioner training, primary care and family medicine, IDP and refugee health, women’s health, maternal and child health, chronic diseases, and healthcare management.
