GOV. RITTER SUBMITS OIL SHALE COMMENTS TO FEDS

Gov. Bill Ritter today submitted comments on behalf of the State of Colorado to the federal Bureau of Land Management in response to the BLM's "Oil Shale and Tar Sands Draft Programmatic Environmental Impact Statement."

"Colorado is blessed with abundant supplies of traditional energy and renewable energy resources," Gov. Ritter said. "Our future economic security, energy security and environmental security depends on our ability to responsibly develop those resources.

"At this time, there are too many unanswered questions surrounding the development of oil shale. We continue to support the research, development and demonstration process now underway, but the RD&D process should be completed prior to the issuance of commercial oil shale leases and prior to the finalization of any regulations."
