Brown, Voinovich Secure Grant for Economic Recovery in Moraine

$187,500 Will Fund Development of Strategy to Promote Economic Development

September 19, 2008

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senators Sherrod Brown (D-OH) and George V. Voinovich (R-OH) helped the city of Moraine secure an $187,500 grant from the Economic Development Administration (EDA). Moraine will use this grant to develop an economic recovery strategy which is necessary as a result of General Motors’ decision to close its assembly facility resulting in the loss of the roughly 2,400 jobs.

“With this grant, we’re investing in the revitalization of a key manufacturing center,” said Brown. “The returns on this investment will not only benefit the local community, but the competitiveness of the region. I was pleased to work with Senator Voinovich to secure these funds.”

“Moraine and the surrounding communities will require significant economic assistance to overcome the many challenges they face,” said Voinovich. “This funding will play an important role ensuring that the families involved can get back on their feet. I commend the local officials for all the hard work they’ve done to help the Moraine community.”

EDA serves as a venture capital resource to meet the economic development needs of distressed communities throughout the United States. EDA's mission is to lead the federal economic development agenda by promoting innovation and competitiveness, preparing American regions for growth and success in the worldwide economy.
