Correction Staff Honored for Valor and Service

Feeling Sick? Why Not Visit Another Day? Help Keep Our Jails Healthy.

People in the custody of the New York City Department of Correction have excellent access to health care.  But with the current concern about H1N1 --"swine flu"-- the Department is asking jail visitors to stay home if they are feeling sick.

Illnesses like influenza can spread easily in institutions like schools and jails.  So visitors who feel sick--and particularly those who have flu-type symptoms--should protect their friend or relative in the jail...and postpone their visit to Rikers Island and other city jails until they feel better.

The NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene reports that the symptoms of the new influenza are like those of other flus, and include: fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, lethargy, headache, chills and fatigue.   Even with those symptoms, you may only be suffering from a regular human flu, but why risk spreading it to the person you plan to visit in jail?

For more information about the flu, consult the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene website at www.nyc.gov.
