Examination Process

In order to be certified, a person must be at least 18 years of age, be physically and mentally qualified to perform the duties of an EMT. A person must be free from addiction to controlled substances or alcoholic beverages, or currently rehabilitated; free from epilepsy or diabetes or, if not free, has been free from any lapses of consciousness for a period of a least 180 days.

Upon successful completion of the course, the student is eligible to participate in the certification exam process for the level of training completed.

Oregon utilizes the examinations of the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians for EMT-Basic and EMT-Paramedic certification testing. The examination developed by Oregon is utilized for certification testing at the EMT-Intermediate level.

Upon successful completion of the examination process at the EMT-Basic or Paramedic level, the candidate receives both National Registry certification and Oregon certification. Upon successful completion of the examination process at the EMT-Intermediate level, the candidate receives Oregon certification.

The students submit application packets with the appropriate application and examination fee to the course director. All documents are then forwarded to the Oregon Health Services for processing. Upon receipt of the applications, the students are scheduled for participation in their certification exam.

A person must take and pass both the written and practical certification examinations within 24 months after completing an approved course. Candidates who fail to become certified within 24 months must retake the entire EMT training program for the level of certification being tested.

EMT-Basic and Intermediate exams are coordinated through the educational institutions. When an application to conduct a course is submitted by a school, a date is selected for the class certification examination. If a candidate is unsuccessful during an exam, the candidate's course director will schedule another exam in which he/she may participate.

EMT-Paramedic examinations are coordinated and conducted through the Oregon Health Services EMS Section. You can view the schedule of upcoming EMT-Paramedic exams by looking at Calendar.

If a candidate is unsuccessful during an EMT exam, he/she may submit an application for retesting, paying additional fees (see below).
