What is a work-related burn?
A burn injury is damage to different layers of the skin. These injuries can be caused by heat, cold, electricity, chemicals, or radiation. A work-related burn injury is one that occurs "on-the-job."
Who conducts work-related burn surveillance?
The Oregon Worker Illness and Injury Prevention Program (OWIIPP) conducts work-related burn injury surveillance. Burn injury surveillance is one of three projects that OWIIPP is currently funded through the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health to do. A major project activity is collecting, analyzing, and interpreting burn injury data from various data sources. OWIIPP shares these data findings with partners and stakeholders to reduce the number of burn injuries that happen in the workplace.

First Aid for Burns in Restaurants
OWIIPP developed a burn injury first aid poster for the restaurant industry. The poster is available for download in English or Spanish (pdf). Copies on durable glossy paper are also available by contacting (971) 673-0977.
Deep Fat Fryer Safety Checklist
Hot oil and hot grease can cause serious, disabling burns to restaurant workers. Many of these thermal burns happen when workers are cleaning, filtering or changing deep fat fryer oil. The following Deep Fat Fryer Checklist was developed for use by restaurant owners, managers and workers. It can be used as a self-inspection guide for deep fat fryer work practices and operations.
