1. January 3 marked the 70th Anniversary of the Bakersfield, Ca warmup. On this date in 1930, Bakersfield tied the record minimum temperature for the date, and as a consequence of downslope warming, the maximum temperature for the same date set a record high. 2. The year 2000 has ushered in bitter weather for Alaska�s Pribilof Islands. In the first 11 days of the new year, 6 daily low temperature records were set, with the lowest -8 degrees on the 11th.
3. As of January 31, Rapid City, SD reported a record 392 consecutive days with no sub-zero temperatures. The previous record was 362 days from December 8, 1982 to December 4, 1983. Their last sub-zero temperature was recorded on January 4, 1999.
4. Many new daily records for warmth were set across the southern U.S. in mid-January. One of the more interesting reports was a new temperature record set for Albuquerque, NM on January 19. The 67 degree reading broke the previous record of 64 degrees set just last year.
5. The maximum temperature of 90 degrees at Del Rio, TX not only set a record for January 19, but it was also the earliest 90 degree reading on record. The previous record was 91 degrees set on January 30, 1911.
6. Las Vegas, NV set 2 temperature records on January 21. The maximum temperature of 69 degrees tied the record for the date set in 1981, and the minimum temperature of 54 degrees broke the high minimum record of 52 degrees set in 1969.
7. Brownsville, TX set a record for the third greatest number of January days with maximum temperature of 80 degrees or higher on January 27. The maximum temperature of 80 degrees was the 17th day this month reaching that threshold. The all time record is 20 days set in 1950, followed by 19 days in 1971.
8. For the 4 month period October 1999-January 2000, the average temperature at Glasgow, MT airport was 32.9 degrees, breaking the old record of 32.1 set in 1957-58.
9. On January 30, Cold Bay, AK recorded a minimum temperature of -13 degrees to break the existing January record of -8 degrees set in 1989. The -13 degree reading also ied the all time station record set in March 1971.
1. Rainfall at Phoenix, AZ on January 2 ended a stretch of 101 days with no precipitation. The previous record was 91 days that began on January 6, 1981. The measurable amount on January 2 (.01") also ended any chance of breaking the record of 160 days of no measurable rainfall (greater than a Trace) that began on December 30, 1971. Also, that measurable amount received on January 2nd, was the only rainfall for the month.
2. October 1999-January 2000 was the driest such 4-month period at Phoenix, AZ. Only 0.01" of rain fell, breaking the old record of 0.47" set in 1903-04. Observations began at Phoenix in 1896.
1. On January 16, Portland, Me received a snowfall of 5.3". This was the latest date on record for the first measurable snowfall in a winter season. The previous record was December 24, 1912. The site also surpassed the record for the latest date with a 1" snowfall measurement, January 7, 1958.
2. Boston, MA record breaking string of 303 consecutive days without measurable snowfall ended on January 13 when 5.6" of snow occurred.
3. Raleigh-Durham , NC reported a snowfall total from the storm beginning Monday evening the 24th through 3 PM on the 25th of 20.3 inches breaking the old record for a single storm event of 17.9 inches measured on February 15-17, 1902. They also set a new monthly snowfall record with a total of 25.8 inches, the old record was 20 inches set back in January of 1893. Records for Raleigh-Durham began in 1887.
4. The 6.5 inches of snow that fell at Little Rock, AR on January 27 was their first measurable snowfall since February 13, 1997.....a period of 1078 days, or 154 weeks. This set a new record for the longest period of time without measurable snowfall. The previous record was 777 days, or 111 weeks set from January 21, 1930 through March 8, 1932. In addition, this snowfall equaled the total snowfall at Little Rock for the last four years. One must go back to January 6, 1996 to account for the previous 6.5 inches of snowfall at the site.
5. Cold Bay, AK recorded a record amount of snowfall in January when 57.1" fell. This broke both the previous January record of 34.6" set in 1982 and the previous all time monthly record of 54.3" set in February 1984. In addition, the greatest snowdepth of 46" was 26" above the previous January record set in 1986 and the all time monthly record depth of 29" set in February 1984.
