Souder Announces $1 Million In Funding For Grace College

Funds To Aid In Development Of Community Emergency Response Team

September 16, 2008
U.S. Rep. Mark Souder announced today that the U.S. Department of Justice has awarded a $1 million Edward Byrne Memorial Discretionary Grant to Grace College in Winona Lake to develop a Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Grace College will train citizens to be a part of the CERT to assist local authorities in response to natural disasters. This Souder-requested funding was awarded as part of the annual appropriations process.

“I am pleased that Grace College will receive $1,073,218 to assist residents of Kosciusko County,” Souder said. “In the unfortunate event of a natural disaster, such as a flood or a severe snow storm, the CERT will help protect our community from needless harm. In a crisis, preparedness programs and response resources are crucial to help defend against damage and injuries.”

“I am pleased that this grant will enhance the services our Integrated Community Emergency Response Training Center (ICERT) can provide to the community in the event of a local disaster,” said Dr. Ronald Manahan, President of Grace College in Winona Lake.

“We are grateful to Congressman Souder for his advocacy in Congress on our behalf, and on behalf of the residents of Kosciusko County. This funding will allow us to equip local citizens with the skills needed to minimize the damage and injury caused in an emergency situation.”

The Community Emergency Response Team will provide centralized communications and relief resources during natural disaster response efforts. The ICERT Center at Grace College will work with citizens to prepare for disasters through education and training, while helping them develop life safety skills. There is no CERT currently in place in Kosciusko County.
