Press Statement Sean McCormack, Spokesman Washington, DC July 10, 2008
Russia: Anniversary of Klebnikov Murder
This week marks the fourth anniversary of the brutal murder of American citizen Paul Klebnikov, who was the editor of Forbes Russia magazine. The U.S. Government recognizes the attention that the Russian government, at the highest levels, has devoted to this case. However, we are disappointed by delays in bringing Paul Klebnikov’s killers to justice. We encourage the Government of the Russian Federation to redouble its efforts to resolve this case and hold the perpetrators responsible. We reiterate our readiness to provide assistance to Russian authorities in bringing the perpetrators of this heinous crime to justice. The intimidation, attacks on, and murder of journalists is an affront to all who value freedom of the media and democratic principles, which must not be tolerated.
