Question Taken At the July 7, 2008 Daily Press Briefing

Assistant Secretary for European Affairs Daniel Fried’s Trip to Cyprus

Question: Please provide an update of A/S Dan Fried’s trip to Cyprus. Do we have an update and/or readout of his mission there?

Answer: The purpose of Assistant Secretary Daniel Fried’s July 6-7 travel to Cyprus was to demonstrate the support of the United States for the efforts of the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders to rejuvenate efforts under UN auspices to foster a comprehensive settlement that reunifies Cyprus into a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation.

During his visit, Assistant Secretary Fried met with the two leaders and UN Special Representative Zerihoun. He also paid a call on Foreign Minister Kyprianou and met with a number of senior leaders, negotiators and political figures from both communities.

As Assistant Secretary Fried stressed publicly in Nicosia, the time has never been more favorable for a settlement. The United States urges the two leaders to show the way forward, and looks forward to supporting their efforts.
