ARS/CSREES

National Animal Production Program Planning Workshop

Kansas City, Missouri

April 10-12, 2006

Purpose:

To communicate with and receive input from stakeholders, customers, and partners in planning the direction of the USDA intramural (ARS) and extramural (CSREES) national research programs in the animal production and well-being area.

Expected Outcomes:

·        Identification of a list of the research needs of the livestock and poultry industries.

·        Prioritization of the research needs for the USDA’s animal production and well-being research programs.

·        Communication to increase support and strengthen the integration of USDA’s research, technology transfer, and extension programs in animal production and well-being.

·        Enhanced a working dialogue among USDA’s partners, professional organizations, the livestock industries, and USDA national program leaders and scientists to help solve priority problems in American animal agriculture.

The primary goal of this meeting is to establish the new USDA Animal Production and Well-Being research action plan, which will guide USDA projects over the next 5 years.  There will be opportunity for information exchange, where USDA scientists will talk about their current research focus, and stakeholders will have an opportunity to provide feedback regarding research direction and needs.  The meeting is meant to be informal with multiple breakout sessions designed to establish open dialogue and discussions.  At the end of the meeting, it is hoped that we will have a clear idea of the current USDA research programs in this area, and an agreement on research priorities and the areas where the future USDA Animal Production and Well-Being research programs will have the greatest impact.
