With Record Wheat Supply, EU Exports Expected Strong

Chart showing rise in EU exportable wheat supplychart showing expected increase in EU exports
EU wheat exportable supplies are expected to reach a record in 2005/06, due to the combination of large carryin stocks (private and government) and prospects for the second largest crop on record. Feed use of wheat is also forecast higher because of smaller coarse grain crops throughout Europe, and drought in Iberia. However, the huge supply should still leave a large surplus for third-country exports and pressure prices.

The weaker euro could also help make exports more competitive. EU exporters will likely benefit from larger demand in traditional North African markets, where crops are expected to be down substantially. Competition from Argentina in Mediterranean markets is expected to diminish, although this could be offset by strong competition again from the Black Sea region. EU exports are currently forecast to reach the highest level since 2002/03, but Commission policy on export subsidies and intervention sales will greatly influence the level of exports.
