Devil's Tower

To the north and west of the Black Hills of South Dakota, there stands a unique natural land formation, rising high into the air.

Known as Devil's Tower, the formation is a renowned landmark and serves travelers well.

Those who braved these virgin lands relied on this slim tower to get their bearings.

It was a dependable sentinel, always a welcome sight.

Today, Devil's Tower stands as a proud monument to Great Plains traditions. Click on the Full Story to learn more!

Artist - Lorenzo Black Lance

"As a Lakota and an artist, I have realized that all things are connected in a continuous cycle of unity.

The Ghost Dance, the Sun Dance and other Lakota rituals are all part of a continuous cycle that reappears in different forms at different times. The hopes and dreams of these rituals are not forgotten. They have only readjusted to today."

"The more people become aware of the Lakota, the longer we shall exist as a people. And most importantly, we must remember, without our dreams we shall cease to exist as a people."
-Lorenzo Black Lance

Traditional Lakota Games and Toys

Traditional Lakota games played before the introduction of non-Native games continue to be important to the Lakota people.

Traditional games brought people together, stimulated social interaction and strengthened social bonds. They also taught skill, patience and cooperation, while measuring competition and endurance - virtues important to being a good Lakota.
