Southern Belt Production and Exports Outpace World Growth

Production in the southern belt increased 67 percent from MY 1992/1993 to 9.4 million bales in MY 2000/2001 accounting for two-thirds of the total increase of world production.  Production was up in all countries except for Paraguay, which recovered from depressed levels in recent years but did not rebound to levels seen in MY 1992/1993.  Australia doubled production from 1.7 million bales in MY 1992/1993 to 3.4 million in MY 2000/2001.  Brazil, the largest producer in the southern belt, increased production 75 percent.  Argentina also increased production 39 percent, and three African countries, Mozambique, South Africa, and Zimbabwe increased production 57 percent.  Total exports in the southern belt countries grew 78 percent over the period, far outpacing world export growth of only 3 percent over the same period.  Southern belt countries share of total world exports in MY 2000/2001 is forecast at 19 percent, up from 11 percent in MY 1992/1993.
