August 2003 Warmest on Record in Riverton...Second Warmest in Lander

September 1, 2003 - Riverton scorched in the warmest August since records were kept in 1918 with an average monthly temperature of 73.5 degrees.  This record exceeded the previous record for August of 73.0 degrees in 2000.  The average temperature in August 2003 was 5.3 degrees above normal.  Riverton experienced the second month in a row for record breaking monthly temperatures. Riverton also came in with the tenth wettest August on record with 0.94 inches of rainfall; nearly double the average rainfall of 0.49 inches in August. 

     Lander baked in the second warmest August since records were kept in 1891 with an average monthly temperature of 73.5 degrees (4.1 degrees above normal).  The warmest August on record was in 1983 with an average temperature of 74.0 degrees.  

     Casper recorded the sixth warmest August on record since 1940 with an average monthly temperature of 72.4 degrees or 3.8 degrees above normal.  Casper also had the fifth wettest August on record since 1940 with 1.69 inches of rainfall-over 230 percent of the monthly average rainfall of 0.73 inches for August.
