  Recreation and Education Opportunities

Environmental Education
Refuge staff and the Friends of Sunkhaze Meadows work with local teachers and students to help them use the refuge for educational purposes. The refuge is part of a National Science Foundation-sponsored education consortium which conducts annual training seminars for teachers at the University of Maine. Refuge lands are used as an outdoor laboratory for teachers and students who participate in this program.

Fishing
Boating and fishing are allowed on all refuge waters. Fishing regulations follow those issued by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Hunting
The refuge is open to all hunting seasons established by the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife, with the exception that coyote hunting is limited to the period October 1 to March 31. Nox-toxic shot is required for all seasons other than those for big game, and no baiting is allowed during any hunting season.

Interpretation
Interpretive kiosks and trail-side exhibits are located in the vicinity of the Johnson Brook Trail on the County Road and the Ash Landing Trail on the Stud Mill Road. A third kiosk is located at the boat landing along U.S. 2 in Costigan, Maine.

Wildlife Observation
The best opportunity to view refuge wildlife and wildlands is by canoeing Sunkhaze Stream between Ash Landing and U.S. 2. Wildlife may also be observed by traversing the boundary of the refuge, which borders the County and Stud Mill Roads in Milford. Hikers may access the interior of the refuge on the Johnson Brook, Ash Landing, and Buzzy Brook Trails. An observation platform is located on the edge of the Sunkhaze Meadows bog, not far from the end of Carter Meadow Road.
