Budget and Appropriations
In my time in the Senate, I have consistently fought to keep spending down and to promote a fiscally responsible federal government. I championed efforts to enact a Constitutional Balanced Budget Amendment, which forced Congress and the president to balance the budget in 1997 for the first time in more than 30 years and led to an unprecedented federal budget surplus.

While I have always supported running a short-term deficit in times of economic recovery and war, I believe Congress must continue to practice fiscal discipline to ensure our economy’s long-run health and our nation’s standard of living.
