Snow Spotter Training

The National Weather Service will conduct Snow Spotter Training classes throughout the fall months in support of the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network, or CoCoRaHS program. The one and one-half hour class is free of charge and open to anyone with an interest in reporting precipitation and snow amounts year round.

Trained observers will be asked to provide precipitation, snowfall and hail reports in support of CoCoRaHS (pronounced Co-Co-Raws). The NWS and other governmental agencies utilize CoCoRaHS as a central location to obtain quality precipitation reports from trained volunteers. The observations enable meteorologists to better understand precipitation patterns across western and central Wyoming. Scientists involved in climate monitoring use the network to better gage drought conditions and moisture conditions.

The CoCoRaHS network is a fun way to participate in meteorologic and hydrologic science and to provide quality data to a wide variety of agencies and individuals. The network, which originated at the Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University, has quickly spread to neighboring states and has been profiled on the Fox News Channel and in USA Today. The network of trained volunteers provides daily precipitation reports using the Internet. Some of the measurement tools are provided free of charge by CoCoRaHS, the USDA Farm Service Agency, and the NWS. For weather and spotter information visit the local National Weather Service website at http://www.weather.gov/riverton or call the Riverton office at 800-211-1448.
