July 27 - Heavy Rain Expected This Afternoon and Evening
Monsoon moisture from the eastern Pacific Ocean will continue to stream north across Wyoming this afternoon and evening. Available atmospheric moisture is about 200 percent of normal. The moist environment combined with the slow-moving nature of the showers and thunderstorms will create heavy rain across much of western and central Wyoming through this evening. Heavy rainfall of the past few days (click here for totals) has also created saturated soils in some locations. This will increase runoff in areas that have received heavy rain on Wednesday and Thursday, thereby increasing flash flood potential.
A flash flood watch has been posted for many areas of western and central Wyoming through midnight tonight. Keep track of flash flood warnings, flash flood statements, and other flood advisories as they are issued by the National Weather Service.
If flash flooding does affect you be sure to move to higher ground immediately. Never play or swim in flood waters, included ditches, culverts, or canals. More than half of all flood-related deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enought to sweep vehicles off the road. When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice, Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
Please report any flash flooding to the National Weather Service in Riverton at 1-800-211-1448.
