  • GenEDITS Plus is intended as a full replacement for GenEDITS Lite, which is near the end of its useful life. GenEDITS Lite has no advantages over GenEDITS Plus, and users should consider switching to GenEDITS Plus. Future technical support and maintenance will concentrate on GenEDITS Plus rather than GenEDITS Lite. All users should consider switching to GenEDITS Plus.

    Released May 2005

In many situations, GenEDITS Lite, which runs with Microsoft® Windows,® is a capable replacement for GenEDITS, which runs with Microsoft DOS and is commonly used in hospitals and cancer registries throughout the United States to apply standard data checks to cancer data. GenEDITS Lite lacks some of the features of GenEDITS, including the ability to use multiple edit sets simultaneously and some reports and customization features. However, GenEDITS Lite is easier to set up and use.

GenEDITS Lite does not allow the selection of multiple edit sets. If multiple edit sets are required in a single run, you should use GenEDITS instead.

    System Requirements

GenEDITS Lite is written for the Microsoft Windows 32-bit environment installed on an Intel® Pentium® or Pentium-compatible computer. The minimum hardware requirements are the same as those of the Microsoft Windows operating system used. Additional system requirements include—

    • Microsoft operating system from Windows 98 through Windows XP.
    • 128 MB RAM (512 MB recommended).
    • Latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer (recommended).
    • 2 MB of free hard disk space.

    Installing or Upgrading GenEDITS Lite

Most users will get GenEDITS Lite from their state central cancer registry, in which case it will be configured according to the state registry's specifications. Other users may receive a copy of GenEDITS Lite in conjunction with a call for data, in which case the program will be configured by the institution that oversees their data. These instructions are for users at a state central cancer registry who want to provide GenEDITS Lite to treatment and diagnosis facilities so they can check data before submission to the central registry.

Before you install or upgrade GenEDITS Lite, please read the following information.

    • This version of GenEDITS Lite was designed to upgrade older database versions automatically while preserving configuration settings. Please be sure you have the latest version of GenEDITS Lite. (See below for download and installation instructions.)

    • If someone else is responsible for maintenance of your computer, you may not be able to install software. In this case, consult the maintainer of your computer for assistance. If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP, you must be logged on as the administrator.

    • If you are upgrading or reinstalling an existing version of GenEDITS Lite, uninstall the existing GenEDITS Lite program.

From the Windows Control Panel, choose Add/Remove Programs.
      Select GenEDITS Lite.
      Click the Change/Remove button.
Click Next; then Remove; then Next in succession on the resulting dialog boxes, and respond to any further prompts that appear.
If you receive a message during the uninstall process about deleting shared files, choose not to delete any shared files.

    • The files and folder structure are preserved after you uninstall the previous version of GenEDITS Lite. Install this version in the same folder as your previous version of GenEDITS Lite to ensure the database and configuration settings are upgraded properly.

    • To ensure the new version of GenEDITS Lite is installed in the same folder as the previous version, open Windows Explorer and locate the folder in which GenEDITS Lite is currently installed.

    • If you are installing GenEDITS Lite for the first time, you may install it on the drive and folder of your choosing; however, you cannot install it in a subfolder. GenEDITS Lite must be installed in a root folder from the drive of your choosing.

    Installation

    1. Download GenEDITS Lite (ZIP-26MB) to your computer.

    2. Double-click the file to to access the software and its documentation. GenEDITS Lite is packaged in dynamic link libraries (DLL) delivered in ZIP files, which include programmer documentation and supplementary files useful for programming and linking the programs to existing systems.

    3. The distribution includes five files: GELite.cfg, setup.bat, METAFILE.zip, README.TXT, and dontrun.exe. To install GenEDITS Lite, open setup.bat and follow the instructions.

    4. To start GenEDITS Lite, open the Windows Start menu and select Programs; then GenEDITS Lite; then the GenEDITS Lite icon.

Note: When first installed, GenEDITS Lite includes test data files and configuration files for demonstration purposes. To run the demonstrations, select Open Configuration File from the File menu.

    Customizing GenEDITS Lite

GenEDITS Lite can be configured in several ways using selections from the File menu. You can select either the metafile or the Record Layout and Edit Set, and activate individual edits by checking them. Specify the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACCR) record version for which you are configuring GenEDITS Lite.

When state registry personnel set up the program to include state-specific options, they copy the Metafile.zip, gelite.cfg, dontrun.exe, and setup.bat files to a new installation CD. (They may customize the instructions in README.TXT as well.) The recipient can then install a version of GenEDITS Lite configured to meet state data-checking rules.

Additionally, GenEDITS Lite users can customize some edits behavior through EditWriter, operating on the latest NPCR–EDITS metafile. GenEDITS Lite users can get the latest metafile from the NAACCR Web site.* Remember to generate a new runtime metafile and compress the resulting .rmf file into a file named Metafile.zip for inclusion on the CD.

You can customize the title that appears at the top of the GenEDITS Lite window by editing gelite.cfg (installed by default in the C:\Program Files\GELite\ directory).

You can prevent configuration changes by changing "Configure=Yes" to "Configure=No" in gelite.cfg. The recipient will be able to select only the input data file and a few reporting options. Changing the value of the Configure field back to Yes will allow adjustments.

    Technical Support

For technical support via e-mail, contact cancerinfo@cdc.gov.

State central cancer registries are the primary users of GenEDITS Lite. CDC helps states set up the software and perform customization. Periodic software updates and problem-solving are also provided to the extent of available resources. Our support is provided exclusively by telephone and e-mail. CDC is not staffed to provide on-site services, nor can we support hospitals, clinics, laboratories, or other private users.

A state central registry or other institution redistributing GenEDITS Lite software should provide all support to users and develop expertise in using the software among its own staff. Other users of GenEDITS Lite software should contract, hire, or develop capability independently to understand and maintain the software applications.

    Future Plans

GenEDITS Lite should be retired from active use in favor of GenEDITS Plus. Support and maintenance for GenEDITS Lite will diminish, and may not include adaptation to work with future standards.
