Partner Profile
The U.S. Army's Fort Lewis, an 86,000-acre post located in Pierce County, Washington, serves more than 34,000 soldiers and civilian workers. Fort Lewis has committed to purchasing twenty percent of its annual electricity needs as renewable energy. Fort Lewis made the purchase as a means of meeting its command-sponsored sustainability goals, which include reducing the use of hydrocarbon-fueled energy and committing to the use of renewable energy sources. In addition to meeting its sustainability goals, Fort Lewis committed to green-e certified power because it wanted to be recognized as a good neighbor to the surrounding community and a responsible steward of the lands that make up Fort Lewis. Fort Lewis officials feel that achieving their sustainability goals through means such as the purchase of green power is just one way in conveying to its neighbors the Army commitment to good environmental stewardship of the installation's natural resources.
