Partner Profile
University of Colorado at Boulder's (CU-Boulder) is a founding EPA Green Power Partner. The CU student government and student body have a long history of advancing environmental protection through the creation of campus projects and programs. In April 2000, CU-Boulder became the first university to increase student fees $1 per student to purchase green power, based on a student vote that passed by a 5 to 1 margin. In 2004, the student government voted to increase wind power purchases to 8.8 million kWh, representing 100 percent of the electric load for the campus Student Union, Health Center, and Recreation Center. That same year the student government required that all new campus construction funded with student fees meet LEED standards. To obtain LEED points CU is purchasing RECs for 3 new campus buildings in the amount of 4.1 million kWh per year. In addition, the campus has a 7.5 kW solar photovoltaic system for the Student Union; the first of several planned solar electric systems for the campus. In 2008, CU decreased its purchase of RECs and instead will be the first buyer of carbon offset credits through the first state-sponsored carbon trading market, the Colorado Carbon Fund (CCF). CU will be purchasing credits equal to a minimum of 2,500 tons of CO2 increasing this amount over time. CCF credit projects include residential conservation weatherization and generating electricity from pig methane.
