Hartwick College has a long history of environmental awareness and action. The Pine Lake Institute (PLI) for Environmental and Sustainability Studies was established in 2007 to set an example for the College and community in practicing the art of living sustainably. The Institute manages the 125-acre Pine Lake Environmental Campus (PLEC), which borders 3,000 acres of state park and was created in 1971. PLEC offers students a unique living laboratory for sustainability where ecological principles such as energy conservation, organic gardening, composting, waste reduction, and recycling are practiced every day. About 30-35 per year students live sustainability at the PLEC. In fall 2006, a 10kw photovoltaic system was installed on Robertson Lodge to provide roughly 50 percent of the lodge's power and 10 percent of the power for the PLEC.
