Colorado State University has long been a leader in adopting environmentally friendly approaches to campus operations, from composting cafeteria waste to new construction which meets the highest sustainability standards. Today, the University continues to focus on these activities while also emphasizing research solutions to the problem of global sustainability and education of the green-collar workforce. Colorado State became one of the first universities in the nation to offer students living on campus the option to purchase renewable energy for their residence hall room or university apartment. On the University's Foothills Campus, 20 buildings are run 100 percent on renewable electricity. Among other green initiatives, Colorado State is launching a wind farm that will make it the first university to produce more power than it consumes; the University runs the state forest service and nursery, which produces more than 2 million seedling trees each year; and it developed its own wetlands to process plant waste from campus greenhouses. Colorado State spinoff companies are helping to clean air in developing nations through development and distribution of clean burning stoves and devices to cut carbon emissions of motorcycle taxis, and creating solar panels that will provide power at an estimated $1 per watt.
