Children Affected by HIV/AIDS

Worldwide, 13.4 million children have become orphans due to HIV/AIDS. Millions more are living with parents who are ill or with families that must stretch scarce resources to care for them. USAID is funding more than 75 activities in 22 countries to help families and communities create and sustain a supportive environment for children affected by HIV/AIDS. USAID activities include material support, such as food, school fees, shelter, and clothing, in addition to economic strengthening, counseling, psychological support, and community care.

  On November 8, 2005, President George W. Bush signed into law the Assistance for Orphans and Other Vulnerable Children in Developing Countries Act (Public Law 109-95). It required the U.S. Government (USG) to devise a single, comprehensive strategy for addressing critical needs among the developing world’s collective of highly vulnerable children. This first annual report on USG implementation of PL 109-95 describes the significant range of activities conducted by various USG agencies to protect and support children made vulnerable by a variety of causes.
