Program Guidance for States
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Division of
Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity provides funding to 23 states via a
cooperative agreement between CDC and State Health Agencies. The purpose of
the cooperative agreement is to improve healthful eating and physical
activity to prevent and control obesity and other chronic diseases by
building and sustaining statewide capacity and implementing population-
based strategies and interventions.
Funded State programs develop strategies to leverage resources and
coordinate statewide efforts with multiple partners to address all of the
following Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Obesity principal
target areas:
- Increase physical activity
- Increase the consumption of fruits and vegetables
- Decrease the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages
- Increase breastfeeding initiation, duration and exclusivity
- Reduce the consumption of high energy dense foods
- Decrease television viewing
