Valentina Vladimirovna Tereshkova (1937- ) is a cosmonaut, a Russian astronaut. She was the first woman to travel in space.

From June 16 to June 19, 1963, Tereshkova traveled around the Earth 45 times -- once every 88 minutes -- in the spacecraft Vostok 6. She operated the spacecraft using only hand controls. When the space flight was over, she landed back on the Earth in a parachute.

Tereshkova was the first space traveler who had not been a test pilot earlier. Instead, she was a parachute jumper. She started parachuting as a hobby. She made over 125 jumps before entering space-flight training school.
