Reducing Our Environmental Impact

Green Tags Offset Impact of Conference Site and Travel

The conference organizers have contracted with the non-profit Bonneville Environmental Foundation  (BEF) to offset the impact of electricity used during the conference and related lodging as well as the impact of travel by speakers and attendees. BEF’s carbon offsets, which it calls Green Tags, are used to replace traditional polluting sources of electricity with clean, secure, and sustainable sources of energy that come from solar and wind power. The sale of Green Tags also supports BEF’s mission to restore damaged watersheds. The watershed program uses an innovative 10-year community-based restoration initiative to improve water quality, restore habitat, and bolster native salmon and trout populations.

BEF was founded in 1998 with the dual mission to restore damaged watersheds and develop new sources of renewable energy. BEF markets green power products to utilities, businesses, government agencies, and individuals.

Conference Reduces Mailing and Printing Costs

Organizers are making several changes from approaches in past conferences to reduce the environmental impact, including:
  • Promotion—A registration mailer will be much smaller than in the past, reducing use of paper and mailing impacts.
  • Registration—All registration will be handled electronically, greatly reducing use of paper and mailing impacts.
  • Hotel and Conference Planning—Numerous pratices will reduce, reuse and recycle a variety of items. Read details.
