U.S. almond exports for marketing year 1999/2000 reached a record 228,169 tons, 24 percent above 1998/99 exports, due to low almond grower prices, which have fallen 38 percent since last year. Despite the record year for production and exports, the value of almond exports was down 22 percent from last year, due to the sharp drop in prices. Low nut prices led to particularly strong demand in China, where exports increased more than 200 percent from last year. Other major markets experiencing strong demand were Canada, up 47 percent; Japan, up 24 percent; India, up 67 percent; and Mexico, up 36 percent from 1998/99. Expected strong overseas demand should contribute to continued high levels of exports in 2000/01, despite the smaller U.S. crop.
