Iran Forecast to Become World's Largest Wheat Importer

For the second time in just four years, Iran is expected to become the world's largest wheat buyer, at 7 million tons, due mainly to last year's drought-reduced crop. Furthermore, continued dry conditions have already raised the possibility of another short crop and that would imply the need for continued strong buying over the next 6-12 months.

So far, the main direct beneficiaries from this larger import demand have been mostly Canada and the EU. Kazakstan, the closest geographical supplier, has been unable to boost its market share because of infrastructure limitations. No U.S. wheat has been purchased, despite last summer's easing of sanctions.
