Korean Tanning Industry's Recovery Drives Resurgence in U.S. Cattle Hide Exports
U.S. exports of hides and skins during January-August 2000 have shown a strong increase of 38 percent compared to this same time last year, in part a result of South Korea's economic recovery. As of June of 2000, U.S. hides and skins enjoyed an 86 percent market share in Korea. This situation and the strength in U.S. exports of hides and skins to South Korea is expected to continue, aided by USDAs $30 million in credit guarantees for the importation of U.S. hides and skins under the Fiscal Year 2001 GSM-102 Export Credit Guarantee Program, announced on October 2, 2000.
