Pakistani Mill Use
Increases to Record Level Production Increases Fill Demand
Pakistan's consumption in 2000/01
is forecast at a record 8.0 million bales, up nearly 5 percent
from the previous year. Continuing strong exports of cotton yarn
and fabric have helped boost consumption. The strong demand is
supported by higher domestic production. The estimate for
Pakistan's production in 1999/00 was raised 200,000 bales to 8.6
million, up 37 percent from 1998/99. For 2000/01, the production
forecast was raised 600,000 bales to 8.3 million. The revised
estimates are based on information indicating increased levels of
unreported ginning activities. Area under cotton production
reached a record of 3.15 million hectares in 1996/97 and has
remained near that level. Yields in 1999/00 and 2000/01 are
significantly above the average of the previous decade due to
favorable weather, low pest pressure, and improved seed
varieties.
