Southern Hemisphere Wheat Export Availability* and Competition Rebound
For the first time in three years, Southern Hemisphere wheat exporters are expected to have larger exportable supplies as more planted area and favorable weather conditions have boosted the size of this year's crops. Annual exportable supplies are dependent on production because Argentina and Australia traditionally hold few stocks.
Combined exports are expected to be up 3 million tons to 27 million, well above the 16 million average during the first half of the 1990s. While Australia is expected to concentrate on its traditional Asian markets, it will also target Iran where imports are projected to double. Argentina will remain a key supplier to Latin America, but will attempt to make additional sales to other markets (just as they did three years ago), notably in North Africa and the Middle East, which will intensify competition with the United States and the European Union.
