Lower Exportable Supplies Lead to Changing Barley Export Dynamics
The EU is forecast to export a record 9 million tons of barley in 1999/2000 as the EU expands its already dominant role in supplying the Middle East. Smaller crops in the Black Sea region (Eastern Europe, Turkey, Ukraine) will lead to a 55 percent drop in exportable supplies.
Middle East import demand remains strong due to a drought that has not only cut production, but also parched pasture areas used to feed sheep, goats, and camels. Iran appears to be the hardest hit in the region, with import demand expected to increase 60 percent.
