Statement of Congressman John D. Dingell on
Congressman Norwood’s Decision to Co-sponsor the Patient Protection Act

"Throughout our fight to pass and have signed into law an effective and enforceable Patients’ Bill of Rights, Dr. Charlie Norwood has always been a wise and courageous leader, and, today, he shows that again. Charlie is more than a co-sponsor of the Patient Protection Act, he is its coauthor, most ardent supporter and fiercest proponent.

"I supported Charlie in his substantial efforts to work out a compromise with the White House, and I agree with him that we now must move forward. The fact is the Ganske-Dingell-Norwood Patient Protection Act is the most comprehensive, bipartisan legislation in Congress. No other piece of legislation can match its scope, rights, remedies or bipartisan support. Does this mean there is no room for improvements? No. The door for sincere negotiations remains open but it is firmly shut to those who would seek to stall it or tie it up in meaningless talks that bears no fruit other than frustration.

"I most heartily applaud my good friend from Georgia’s decision today. With his help, this will be the bill and this will be the time that we make it to the Rose Garden."
