Career Summary:
As Project Leader, I supervise a diverse team of scientists and
support staff with the mission of providing fundamental scientific
information and appropriate practical guidelines needed to manage
northern forest ecosystems for both ecological and economic sustainability.
Much of my effort is fostering collaboration with university faculty
and students by promoting cooperative research to enhance the value
of long-term studies on experimental forests managed by the unit,
two in Maine and one in New Hampshire. I have also developed partnerships
with agencies and organizations interested in using the experimental
forests to demonstrate good forestry to professional land managers
and the public.
Since joining the Forest Service in 1979, my career has focused
on research and technology transfer in the areas of artificial regeneration
of southern pines and natural regeneration and stand development
of northern conifers and pine-oak ecosystems. I have authored or
coauthored over 60 articles and have given numerous presentations
at professional meetings, conferences, and workshops. In addition,
I am a member of a Forest Service team working with Russian colleagues
to demonstrate sustainable forestry practices in the Krasnoyarsk
region of central Siberia.
