The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service captured second place in the category of film and video for its education production of Wild Things 2003, Habitat is Home Sweet Home, in a highly competitive judging by the National Association for Interpretation. The award was announced at the National Interpreter's Workshop, the association's national convention, Nov. 16-20.

Wild Things is an annual, interactive learning adventure that brings national wildlife refuges live into America's classrooms for those in grades 5-7. The program, offered free via satellite, helps students and teachers explore the fascinating critters and natural resources on wildlife refuges.

Now in its eighth year, Wild Things is a multi-media program that also features an Educator's Guide and Web-based content that connects students with conservation experts. Each program features live guides, including school children, who bring a special dimension to the educational experience. The 2003 program was a partnership among the National Wildlife Refuge System, the National Conservation and Training Center, and National Geographic. Co-producers Randy Lennon and Deborah McCrensky were among the professionals honored by the award.

This year's broadcast, Wild Things 2004, "Recovering Endangered Species – Bringing Them Back," was telecast on October 7, 2004, and potentially reached an audience of more than 10 million viewers.
