What is Sustainability?
Using, developing and protecting resources in a manner that enables us to meet current needs and provides that future generations can also meet their future needs from the perspective of environmental, economic and community objectives. The initiatives in Oregon have become models for the rest of the nation.

Ways the State Controller's Division Promotes Sustainability
  1. We recycle - have barrels located around the office for materials that can be recycled such as cans/bottles, all types of paper, cardboard and printer cartridges.
  2. We print all of our checks, pay stubs, and reports using recycled paper.
  3. We encourage agencies to process vendor payments through ACH whenever possible.
  4. We use electronic transfer payments for transactions with state agencies.
  5. We conserve energy by using less artificial light (we have removed strips of ceiling lights) and use long lasting energy efficient overhead ceiling lighting.
  6. We conserve paper by printing on both sides of paper whenever possible. All printers in SCD have duplexing capabilities.
  7. We reuse office supplies as much as possible before recycling.
  8. We buy recyclable office supplies whenever possible.
  9. We turn off all equipment when we leave for the day such as printers, copiers and computers to conserve energy.
  10. We turn off all overhead lighting as well as task lighting each day as we leave.
  11. We post information such as manuals and reports to our website instead of mailing a hard copy.
  12. We send announcements and memos to our customers via email instead of sending out memos through the mail.
  13. We post our recruitments on-line and do not run newspaper ads.  Applicants can apply on-line also.  Managers use on-line recruitment tools to manage their recruitments.
  14. We have our new employees read current policies on-line instead of printing them.
  15. We use modular recycled carpet squares. They reduce installation rates, are changed out easily and efficiently which extends the life of the carpet.
  16. We maintain our statewide financial and payroll system applications with the utmost efficiency. Instead of recommending new systems or software, we make enhancements to the existing computer applications such as the “facelift” we are creating right now with our stakeholders for the financial system. Why throw out the old when we can just renew its life and make our investment last longer? This enables us to keep our operating costs low and avoid high purchasing and startup costs. It delays having to hire additional staff to implement a new system which requires more consumption of energy and resources.
  17. We archive data processing records on a regular basis following state retention schedules. We also delete old archived data regularly per state retention schedules. These maintenance procedures help keep the financial and payroll systems processing efficiently while using minimal energy.
  18. We partner with Office Max to order supplies in reusable totes instead of packing boxes.
  19. We recently implemented a wide variety of flexible work schedules in an efffort to reduce our carbon footprint and reduce energy consumption in the workplace.
