The following is a list of conferences that provide information about a wide range of safety and health topics that impact in various degrees the health and well being of the 21 million people who are employed in the combined Wholesale and Retail Industry sector. Information obtained from these conferences will be of value to the members of the Wholesale and Retail Trade Research Council as they develop a research agenda for the nation. As the research agendum is developed and new information is obtained about the causes and prevention of injuries, illnesses, and fatalities that occur within this sector, it is anticipated that future conferences will feature specific sessions on wholesale and retail trade issues and those conferences will be listed as they are planned.
NORA Town Hall Meeting
NIOSH co-sponsored with the University of South Florida the Wholesale and Retail Trade sector Town Hall meeting on February 13, 2006, Tampa, Florida. The purpose of the Town Hall meeting was to seek public participation and input from individuals and organizations, labor, business, academia, and professional for the purpose of establishing a National Occupational Research Agenda (NORA). NIOSH is seeking information about important occupational safety and health issues within the Wholesale and Retail Trade Industry sector. Information is needed about topics such as diseases, injuries, exposures, populations at risk, and needs of the occupational safety and health system. Input is also requested on the types of research and partners needed to make a difference.
NORA Symposium 2006
NIOSH, in partnership with the National Safety Council, will celebrate the success of the first decade of the NORA and launch its second decade at the NORA Symposium 2006. The conference will be held April 18-20, 2006, in Washington, DC. The next decade of NORA will use a sector-based approach to better guide research results to improved practice in workplaces. These themes will be explored through plenary speakers, awards, presentations of scientific results and workshops.
Work, Stress and Health 2006: Making a Difference in the Workplace
NIOSH, the American Psychological Association, the National Institute of Justice of the U.S. Department of Justice, the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research of the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Labor convened the sixth international conference on occupational stress and health. The conference, which took place March 2-4, 2006, in Miami, Florida, addressed the constantly changing nature of work and the implications of these changes for the safety, health, and well-being of workers. In keeping with the conference theme of making a difference in the workplace, there was a focus on the translation of research to practice and workplace programs, policies, practices, case experiences, and other efforts to prevent stress in today's workplace.
Injury and Violence in America: Meeting Challenges, Sharing Solutions
NIOSH partnered in the 2005 National Injury Prevention and Control Conference held in Denver, Colorado. The conference was hosted by the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control, the State and Territorial Injury Prevention Directors Association (STIPDA), and the Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR). Workplace violence was discussed in an invited session.
8th Annual Applied Ergonomics Conference
Co-sponsored by NIOSH and partners, the conference provided examples of everyday ergonomic problems and challenges faced in the workplace. Companies shared best practice programs with excellent returns on their companies' ergonomics investment. The conference took place March 21-24, 2005 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Partnering in Workplace Violence Prevention: Translating Research to Practice
NIOSH convened a first conference on the topic of workplace violence prevention, which was attended by a diverse group of business and labor leaders, researchers, professional associations, policy makers and legislators, and victim's rights advocates. The conference was held November 15-17, 2004, Wyndham-Baltimore Inner Harbor , Baltimore , Maryland . The goals of the conference included identifying successful workplace violence prevention strategies, identifying the barriers and challenges to implementation of workplace violence prevention efforts and strategies for overcoming them, identifying major research and information dissemination gaps that must be addressed to advance workplace violence prevention, and the roles of the various groups, agencies, and organizations in making significant progress in workplace violence prevention over the next decade.
Steps to a Healthier US Workforce
NIOSH, with the support of 23 co-sponsors, 30 supporters, and more than 400 participants, launched the Steps to a Healthier US Workforce Initiative. This conference took place October 26-28, 2004, Cafritz Conference Center, Washington D.C. This initiative was the first to unite researchers, policymakers, practitioners, and industry and labor leaders in one place with the goal of integrating individual worker health and healthy lifestyle promotion with the NIOSH mission of protecting and improving working conditions and the work environment.
Symposium on Improving Immigrant Safety and Health
Co-Sponsored by NIOSH-NORA Special Populations Team and the University of Massachusetts Lowell's Department of Work Environment, September 26-27, 2004. This symposium gathered almost 200 researchers, community leaders, union representatives, activists, lawyers, industry representatives, and government workers to examine the social, political, and economic factors that place foreign-born workers at high risk. Sessions focused on legal and policy barriers; language, literacy, and cultural barriers; and barriers to the reporting of work related injuries and illnesses.
Long Working Hours, Safety, And Health: Toward A National Research Agenda
Using a multi-disciplinary approach, this conference explored the sociological, economic, and health dimensions of long work hours. This conference was co-sponsored by NIOSH, the University of Maryland, and the US Department of Justice and was held April 29 - 30, 2004, University of Maryland, Baltimore, Maryland.
