A Wet Night on the Western Slope (8/15/06)

Thunderstorms brought heavy rain to western Colorado on Tuesday night, mainly along the I-70 corridor. A short wave with jet stream support brought some areas some of the heaviest 34 hour precipitation so far this year.

At Walker Field Airport, 0.70 inches of rain fell. It wasn’t a record for the date (0.76" fell on August 15, 1912), but it did bring the monthly total to well above normal. As of mid month, Grand Junction has officially recorded 1.12 inches, 133% of the entire monthly average. The wettest August day on record saw 1.43 inches on August 24, 1921 (Contributing to the monthly total of 3.70 inches, Grand Junction’s wettest August).

This helps lower the city’s yearly precipitation deficit , raising the 2006 total to 5.16 inches (78% of normal).
