Hot, Dry June in the Grand Valley

Due to a warm high pressure center that camped over the Four Corners area for the entire month, June 2006 emerged as tied for the 10th warmest June in Grand Junction recorded history. Twenty five days saw daily temperature departures above normal, ranging from +1 on the 10th to +14 on the 6th.

With an average monthly temperature of 75.8°, this June was 4.7 degrees above normal. The warmest day, the 6th, saw a high temperature of 101°, setting a new record for the date (the original record was 99° set in 2004).

The average high temperature was 92.4° (normal is 86.9°), while the average low temperature was 59.1° (normal is 55.3°). The number of  cooling degree day units was 329, or 97 units above normal (which means that area residents likely paid a bit extra to cool their homes this month).

June is normally the driest month of the year in the Grand Valley, and this June was drier than normal. Only two days (7th and 8th) saw measureable precipitation, totalling 0.31 inches (0.41 inches is normal). As of mid year, Grand Junction’s total precipitation is only 56% of average.
