NPS Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument

Position Description
Volunteers are asked to make a 3 month/32 hour a week minimum commitment for October through April, and a 4month/32 hour a week minimum commitment in the high visitation season of May through September.

Location Description

The National Monument is located in the Gila National Forest and Gila Wilderness area of southwestern New Mexico, and is operated by the National Park Service. The park includes the 700 year old Mogollon Cliff Dwellings and the multi-agency Gila Visitor center. Volunteers give daily guided tours of the cliff dwellings, and provide visitor assistance in all areas of the park. Recreational opportunities include hiking and backpacking, horse trails, kayaking, wilderness hot springs, wildlife observation, and outstanding solitude.

INTERPRETATION volunteers are needed to provide guided tours of the cliff dwellings and share information about the the area's cultural and natural resources. VISITOR CENTER STAFF are needed to provide wilderness, cliff dwelling, and area information to visitors and sell bookstore items through Western National Parks Association. MAINTENANCE volunteer opportunities exist for various field and shop.

The main visitor season is May—October, but year-round staffing needs exist. Limited housing may be available including RV pads with full, paid hookups; or private dorm rooms with shared kitchen and bath facilities.

NPS Visitor Center Assistant

Position Description
Help visitors make intellectual and emotional connections to park resources by volunteering with the Curecanti Interpretation program.

Volunteers are needed to staff three visitor centers, at Elk Creek, Lake Fork and Cimarron. Volunteers welcome visitors, provide information, encourage youth in the Junior Ranger program, and may also rove trails or offer short interpretive talks. We welcome volunteers of all ages and all abilities. Volunteers would work at least 4 hours per week, for a minimum of 8 weeks.

HOUSING IS NOT AVAILABLE, including parking spots for RVs or trailers. Work is primarily May-September, but winter work may be available.

NPS Interpretation Intern

Position Description
NOTE: This position has been filled for 2008. The following information refers to our 2009 position.

Do you like hiking, spending time outdoors, and sharing your passion for learning and nature with others? Help visitors make intellectual and emotional connections to park resources by volunteering with the Curecanti Interpretation program this summer!

Interns work alongside interpretation staff, presenting formal interpretive programs at campgrounds and on a tour boat, doing informal interpretation by roving trails and overlooks and performing boat patrols, working on special projects, staffing two visitor centers, and shadowing staff from other divisions.

Interns of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities are welcome to apply. Interns must be willing to wear a uniform, comply with a background check, and work as a part of a team. The job does entail some physical exertion, including a long stairway and trail to and from boat tours, park roves, and lifting boxes, all at above 7,500 feet in elevation. Accommodations may be available for those with physical limitations. Shifts often include weekends and evenings.

Interns are provided with a uniform, a nominal stipend ($100/week), and free housing. The housing is in a dormitory, with a private bedroom, a bathroom shared with one other person, and kitchen, laundry, and living room facilities shared. Satellite TV, a pay phone, and wireless internet service are provided; private phone lines may not be installed, and cell phones may have limited reception in the area.

Ideally Interns work from May 12 for 12-15 weeks (our seasonal training is May 13-24), but there is some flexibility. Applications will be reviewed in early February. We hope to hire by late February/ early March of 2008.

NPS Trail Ambassador

Volunteers are needed to rove trails,shorelines, and marinas within the park, helping visitors to make good trail decisions, have safe experiences, learn about park resources, and protect the natural and cultural history of the area. Trails range from short, relatively flat walks to very steep and strenuous hikes. All trails are above 7,000 feet in elevation. We welcome volunteers of all ages and all abilities; those with physical limitations may be limited to shorelines and marinas. Volunteers would work at least 4 hours per week, for a minimum of 8 weeks.

NPS SPRING Resource Education Internship

Position Description
Area Description--Olympic National Park is located in the northwest corner of Washington State. This nearly one million-acre park encompasses incredible diversity—from wilderness coast and temperate rainforest to glacier-capped peaks.

Job Description--The intern will work as an entry-level resource education park ranger. Interns work both alongside experienced park rangers and independently. Duties typically include staffing visitor centers, preparing and presenting interpretive programs, and working with school groups. Interns also participate in behind-the-scenes education projects. Extensive training is provided.

Internship Dates--Mid March - Early/Mid June.

Benefits-- A stipend, training and housing are provided. College credit may be available. Internship experience is often helpful when applying for paid ranger positions in the future.

Qualifications--Applicants should have good communication skills, be enthusiastic and outgoing, and enjoy learning and sharing with others. Applicants are usually upper level undergraduate students or recent graduates of a natural science, environmental education, or park management program. People in other fields with interest or experience in natural history, education, or the outdoors will also be considered. Some knowledge of ecological processes and natural history is desirable. The ability to work both independently and with people is essential.

Applications are received year-round and selections are made upon receipt. As a general guideline applications should be received by Janurary 5 for spring internship positions.

BLM El Mirage Visitor Contact Representative
El Mirage Visitor Center (El Mirage, CA)

Position Description
Volunteer will provide information to visitors on things to do and see in the El Mirage Recreation Area and assist in the new El Mirage Visitor Center. Hosts may perform visitor contact services, facility maintenance (Restocking paper products and light sweeping, dusting, etc.) and help man the new visitor center. The hosts will gather useful information and keep the supervisor informed of any problems in the area. If the host observes what is or may be an illegal activity, the host will share that information with the supervisor or law enforcement staff. Other duties may be assigned as mutually agreed upon. The El Mirage Off-Highway Vehicle (OHV) Area is located in the Mojave Desert on the western edge of San Bernardino County near the Los Angeles County Line. This Off-Highway vehicle riding area attracts a variety of activities. During summer months, temperatures can reach a high of 120 degrees F. Summer thunderstorms can come with spectacular force, although most of the minimal precipitation falls during winter months. Winter lows can fall to 5 degrees F. at night, with highs in the 60 to 70 degree F. range during the day. Spring and Fall temperatures are moderate and fall between these extremes. We are looking for volunteers who like to talk, meet, and communicate with a variety of people. A good attitude, ability to listen, and ability to relay information are necessary. Volunteer must have a valid driver’s license. In return for your volunteer work, you will be given a camping site with free water and electric hookups and a small monthly stipend. You will need to provide a recreation vehicle. Hosts will work a minimum of 30 hours per week, which includes weekend days. Hosts will have two consecutive weekdays off. Shifts will vary depending upon Visitor Center needs.

Volunteer will provide environment-based education (focusing on the Mojave Desert) using activities, games, experiments and stories to the visiting public and school groups K-12 at the Desert Discovery Center (DDC). Position Description
Volunteer would assist with providing information to visitors on the Center itself, scheduled activities, and the local area; give introductions to programs and conduct guided tours of the exhibit hall when required. These services assist in the public relations effort of the visitor center, make guests feel welcome, and provide necessary information about the center and its activities. Located on the south shore of Lake Superior in Northern Wisconsin, the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center represents the northern regions of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. The visitor center functions through a partnership between the USDA Forest Service, National Park Service, State Historical Society of Wisconsin University of Wisconsin-Cooperative Extension, Friend of the Center Alliance, Lake States Interpretive Association, Northern Wisconsin History Center, and area Chambers of Commerce. The visitor center's facilities, services, and programs present an overview of the historical interaction of human cultures and the land and natural resources of the region from the Ice Age to the present. The visitor center features an observation town that resembles a lighthouse watchtower, which stands five stories over the surrounding landscapes, with a commanding view of Lake Superior. In addition, the visitor center includes other features designed to immerse the visitor in the natural and cultural history of the Great Lakes Region. LOCATION

Position is located in the Administrative Section located at Big Cypress National Preserve Headquarters building in Ochopee, Florida.

INTRODUCTION

Volunteer works under the direct supervision of the Information Technology Specialist.

OBJECTIVE

The branch of Information Technology Services provides Preserve-wide communications management and Preserve-wide procurement support for computer hardware, software, and operations services; Preserve-wide computer support; and support to the users of computers in the Preserve (BICY). The volunteer will independently function as an active member of the Administrative Division by completing daily assignments in a safe and professional manner. The incumbent represents the Preserve as a uniformed Volunteer and provides adequate support to the Telecommunications/Administrative personnel in the day-to-day operation of their duties.

MAJOR DUTIES

Volunteer duties for this position will include, but are not limited to the following:1. Provide user support services for Preserve employees. Provide technical assistance and training to Preserve staff members in the installation, use, maintenance and repair of the full range of computer hardware and software owned and used in these activities.2. Ensure that equipment procured under various contracts meets National Park Service (NPS) standards and is 100% acceptable under the provision of the contract.3. Incumbent is responsible for the on-the-job safety and health at all times. Initiates efforts conforming to established local and Bureau Safety Programs to satisfy this responsibility. Responsibilities include identifying and correcting job safety and health hazards.4. Must possess a working or entry level knowledge of contemporary computer processing, including hardware, software and operations. Entry level knowledge of microcomputers and communications technology is desired.5. Assist the Administrative staff of Big Cypress National Preserve by acting as a uniformed representative of the National Park Service, displaying professionalism while on and off duty, inclusive of living in government housing.6. Must enjoy working with the Big Cypress staff and be a team player within the ranks of the Administrative staff.7. Must adhere to all safety rules and regulations inclusive of driving government vehicles and using government equipment. 8. Able to answer routine telephone inquiries and be able to take phone messages accurately, and/or transfers individuals to other office telephones. Must be able to contact Dispatch by telephone or radio in case of an emergency. 9. Basic computer skills are desired (Microsoft Office). We are looking for flexible, dependable volunteers.

TIME COMMITMENT REQUIRED

A single VIP is expected to provide a minimum of 32 hours of volunteer service per week. If a couple is providing volunteer service, the amount per volunteer will be 24 hours per week or a total of 48 hours per couple per week. The VIP is expected to live at an assigned housing area during their working stay at Big Cypress National Preserve. The desired length of stay is from Mid-October until early April.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed primarily indoors in office settings, although projects often require visits to other locations for meetings, task force projects, etc.

LOCATION

Position is located in the Administrative Section located at Big Cypress National Preserve Headquarters building in Ochopee, Florida.

INTRODUCTION

Volunteer works under the direct supervision of the Administrative Officer assisting administrative sections (Human Resources, Contracting, Budget, and IT) with general office tasks.

OBJECTIVE

Incumbent will independently function as an active member of the Administrative Division by completing daily assignments in a safe and professional manner. Incumbent represents the Preserve as a uniformed Volunteer and provides adequate support to administrative personnel in the day-to-day operation of their duties.

MAJOR DUTIES

Volunteer duties for this position will include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Assist the administrative staff of Big Cypress National Preserve by acting as a uniformed representative of the National Park Service, displaying professionalism while on and off duty, inclusive of living in government housing areas. 2. Must enjoy working with the Big Cypress staff and be a team player within the ranks of the Administrative staff.3. Must adhere to all safety rules and regulations inclusive of driving government vehicles and using government equipment.4. Performs a wide variety of clerical duties of a general nature such as: typing, mail distribution, updating directories and manuals, bulk mailings, filing, using the copy machine and the computer, etc.5. Able to answer routine telephone inquiries and be able to take phone messages accurately, and/or transfers individuals to other office telephones. Must be able to contact Dispatch by telephone in case of an emergency. 6. Basic computer skills are desired (Microsoft Office, D-base). We are looking for flexible, dependable volunteers.

TIME COMMITMENT REQUIRED

A single VIP is expected to provide a minimum of 32 hours of volunteer service per week. If a couple is providing volunteer service, the amount per volunteer will be 24 hours per week or a total of 48 hours per couple per week. The VIP is expected to live at the assigned housing area during their working stay at Big Cypress National Preserve. The desired length of stay is from Mid-October until early April.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed primarily indoors in an office setting.

Education work with area students where we teach them the importance of protected places and why we use fire as a management tool.We have campsites available for work campers as well.

Help the shipwrights maintain and restore the ships at Hyde Street Pier. Most, but not all of the tasks involve the preparation and painting of wood and steel surfaces.
