Having recently assumed our respective roles as Scientific and Clinical Director of the NIAMS IRP, we are excited by the opportunity to usher in a second twenty years of paradigm-shifting research that we hope will be even more noteworthy than the first twenty. While we will continue to provide enthusiastic support to our basic research laboratories, we plan a number of initiatives that should further augment the translational aspects of our program. Due to attrition, we have the unique opportunity to recruit two tenure-track or tenured physician-scientists who will establish integrated laboratory/clinical programs, one in pediatric rheumatic diseases and a second focusing on one of the more common adult rheumatic diseases. We also hope to attract another senior clinician who will focus on interventional trials in rheumatic disease, and to realize the long-standing objective of NIAMS to establish an Intramural Orthopaedic Surgery program. Our plans also call for a reorganization of the IRP that will further facilitate translational studies, and the development of a new trans-Institute, multidisciplinary training program in translational research, the Clinical Scholars Program in Inflammation and Immunity. We also plan to extend the successful interactions of our translational program with extramural centers, both through a sabbatical program and through senior clinical fellowships.

As evidenced by a host of former trainees who have populated academic programs, research institutes, and biotechnology companies around the world, the NIAMS IRP has a strong commitment to the training of fellows and students across the spectrum from basic biology to clinical trials, and can provide a nurturing environment for career development at all levels. We stand committed to maintain and expand this tradition as we begin the high adventure of the second twenty years of the NIAMS IRP.
