WANTED BY THE FBI!
Calling all linguists to serve your country

10/14/03

FBI Calling all linquists graphicHave a proficiency in Albanian? How about Vietnamese? Or any number of languages in between? Have we got a job for you.

Director Mueller is personally appealing to U.S. citizens with language skills to apply for a linguist position in the FBI on a contract basis. It's a fascinating job, and would give you a chance to make a difference in criminal investigations and in protecting the country against terrorists and spies.

FBI language specialists, for example, were crucial in the UNABOM case, translating Ted Kaczinski's journal of his bomb-making processes from his self-taught Spanish. To the 9/11 terrorist investigation, of course. To international organized crime cases. To every FBI case that involves multiple languages... and that's a lot of them.

Here's how the FBI Director puts it: "The FBI needs to have linguists who not only speak the language, but also understand the culture, and the country. The translator also has to be able to pick up subtleties that would assist investigators."

What languages specifically?

Albanian, Amharic, Arabic, Bulgarian, Burmese, Chinese (All Dialects), French, German, Hebrew, Indonesian, Kazakh, Korean, Kurdish, Malay, Malayalam, Pashto, Serbo-Croatian, Somali, Swahili, Tajik, Thai, Tamil, Tigrinya, Turkish, Turkmen, Uigur, Urdu, Uzbek, and Vietnamese. Other languages may be posted on the FBI job site on an ad hoc basis.

What are the job requirements?

You must be a U.S. citizen... be proficient in both English and at least one of the above languages... and pass all the screening tests for employment. These include language testing, a polygraph examination, and a comprehensive background investigation. Once approved, you would be contracted on an hourly basis and would work on FBI premises -- including foreign travel, as required.

What are you waiting for?

Apply now at www.fbijobs.com and submit your application into the Foreign Language Skills Registry for future consideration. It's a great job -- why not today?
