ABSTRACT

Defense-related employment and spending, 1996-2006

Allison Thomson
Economist, Office of Employment Projections, Bureau of Labor Statistics

The decade-long contraction in defense-related expenditures and employment is projected to continue through 2006, although at a significantly slower pace than the decline experienced from 1987-1996. The continuing reductions will affect employment across all industries and occupations directly and indirectly related to defense. This article summarizes BLS projections of defense-related employment and spending from 1996 to 2006.
