August 2008: IDRC 2008 - The 'Chambersburg' Meeting

Steve Delwiche served as conference chair for this year's 14th International Diffuse Reflectance Conference (IDRC), August 3-8, 2008, held by the Council for Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (CNIRS). IDRC is held biannually at Wilson College in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, for near-infrared spectroscopy and related fields of vibrational spectroscopy.

July 2008: Agricultural Research Magazine

The July 2008 issue of Agricultural Research Magazine featured two articles highlighting FSL research: Manan Sharma's work with bacteriophages is described in Bacteriophages as Novel Antimicrobials for Food Safety, and Pat Millner's work with studies of bacteria associated with organic produce is described in Organic vs. Conventional Production - Measuring Microbes on Fresh Produce.

June 2008: ASABE Food Processing Automation 2008 and Annual International Meeting

Moon Kim and Kevin Chao served as co-chairs for the 2008 Food Processing Automation conference in Providence, Rhode Island, June 28-29, 2008. The conference was sponsored by the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) and immediately preceded its Annual International Meeting, June 29 - July 2, 2008. FSL researchers Kevin Chao, Won Jun, Jitu Patel, Chun-Chieh Yang, and graduate student I-Chang Yang, presented their research.

March 2008: SPIE Defense and Security

Moon Kim and Kevin Chao chaired and presented their research at the conference special session entitled "Food Safety" in Orlando, Florida, March 17-20, 2008. This session focused on optical, spectroscopic, and spectral imaging sensing technoques, and approaches for the use of biosensors, for rapid or non-destructive assessment of safety and quality for meats, fruits, and vegetables.

September 2007: SPIE Optics East

Scientists from FSL presented their research at the conference entitled "Optics for Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Food II" at Optics East in Boston, Massachusetts, September 9-12, 2007. The conference co-chairs include FSL scientists Moon Kim and Kevin Chao. They and Stephen Delwiche are also serving on the program committee. Optics East is sponsored by SPIE and includes 26 conferences covering topics in sensor technologies, fiber optics, nanosensors, and more.

June 2007: The FSIS 2007 Meat & Poultry Inspection Seminar visits BARC and the Food Safety Laboratory

Foreign officials from 24 different countries toured BARC and also visited the Food Safety Laboratory for presentations on meat safety research and poultry inspection research in Buildings 201 and 303 on June 20, as part of the FSIS 2007 Meat & Poultry Inspection Seminar for International Government Officials that was held in Washington, D.C., June 4-22, 2007.

June 2007: ASABE Annual International Meeting

FSL researchers Kevin Chao, Moon Kim, Alan Lefcourt, and Chun-Chieh Yang, and graduate student Priya Narayanan, attended the 2007 Annual International Meeting of the American Society of Agricultural and Biological Engineers (ASABE) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, June 17-20, to present their research.

June 2007: New Food Safety Laboratory

The new Food Safety Laboratory combines the Instrumentation & Sensing Laboratory and the Food Technology & Safety Laboratory, and also includes scientists from the Sustainable Agricultural Systems Laboratory and the Environmental Microbial Safety Laboratory.
