Like the Fortuna Reefer, here shown on the reef
circling Mona Island off the coast of Puerto Rico,
ships that run aground can damage fragile corals and many other marine resources. |

NOAA’s Damage Assessment, Remediation and Restoration Program (DARRP) restores natural resources after oil spills, toxic releases, and physical impacts such as ship groundings. It is a multi-office effort involving the Restoration Center, Assessment and Restoration Division, and Office of General Counsel for Natural Resources.
DARRP collaborates with other federal, state, and tribal natural resource trustees in:
- Assessing and quantifying injuries to natural resources
- Seeking damages for those injuries from the responsible parties
- Implementing restoration
- Monitoring progress to ensure restoration goals are met
DARRP works with the public to identify restoration projects that benefit a wide variety of habitats and biological resources.
